Why Mission San Juan Capistrano's 250th Lasts Longer Than One Sunday

October 8, 2026

The 250th anniversary of Mission San Juan Capistrano falls on Sunday, November 1. The Mission's posted plan for that day has three parts: an official celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a bell ringing at noon, and free birthday cupcakes from noon to 2 p.m. There are no speakers, music lineup or parking plan for the day on the Mission's schedule. The cupcakes go to the first 1,000 guests. The rest of the anniversary is spread across late September through December, and much of it happens on weekday mornings and Los Rios evenings. If you live a few blocks away, those dates are easy to make.

The founding date has a short program

The details of November 1 are worth knowing before you go. It's a Sunday, and on the Mission Basilica's parish calendar it's also All Saints Day. Regular Sunday liturgies are listed at 7:30, 9 and 11 a.m., a 1 p.m. Misa, and 5 p.m. All Saints Day Masses are listed at 5 and 7 p.m. The parish doesn't list any of these Masses as part of the anniversary. Still, it will be a busy Sunday around Old Mission Road.

The Mission's own pages don't agree on start time. The anniversary page says the celebration begins at 9 a.m. The November events calendar lists special hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you want a good spot for the noon bell, plan around the later time and come early.

Admission is the other thing to check. The Mission hasn't said November 1 is free. Its current rates are $19 for adults, $16 for seniors, $11 for students and youth, and $10 for member guests. Members and children 4 and younger get in free. The Capistrano Dispatch's October SJC250 guide says the month's Mission events are free with a membership. With that many dates on the calendar, a membership covers a lot of the anniversary.

October has most of the program

The October calendar has more on it than the founding day does. Here it is in order, using the Mission's 250th schedule, the Dispatch guide and the SJC250 committee's event list.

Date What Where
Oct. 1 to Nov. 2 Día de los Muertos Altar Mission San Juan Capistrano
Oct. 5 to Nov. 2 Artifact of the Month: Acjachemen baskets from the early 1900s Mission, Acjachemen Exhibit
Tues., Oct. 6, 10 and 11:30 a.m. Historic trolley tours of downtown San Juan Capistrano Historical Society
Tues., Oct. 13, 10 a.m. Historic bell ringing for Indigenous Peoples Day Mission
Fri., Oct. 23, 10 a.m. Historic bell ringing for the Feast Day of St. John of Capistrano Mission
Oct. 23 and 24, evenings Ghosts & Legends of San Juan Capistrano Los Rios Street
Sat., Oct. 24, 6 to 8 p.m. Commemoration of the founding of the Mission Blas Aguilar Adobe

Two of these dates matter more than they look. The October 23 bell ringing honors the saint the Mission is named for. The Dispatch notes that St. Junipero Serra chose St. John of Capistrano because the name reminded him of his home church in Mallorca, Spain. The October 13 bell ringing, the Acjachemen basket display and the September gala all point the same way. The Dispatch reports that this year's Romance of the Mission gala honored the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation. According to the Dispatch, some of the baskets were used for gathering food, and others were watertight enough to hold boiling water.

The Dispatch also reports that the Mission's exhibit of Virgin Mary paintings runs through November 15. That exhibit isn't on the Mission's anniversary schedule, but it's open well past the founding date.

Los Rios fills the evenings

The Mission's events are mostly in the morning. The evening events are a short walk away on Los Rios Street. The Historical Society's Ghosts & Legends tours run October 23 and 24. General-admission slots are at 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8 and 8:30 p.m., and tours start at the Historical Society, 31831 Los Rios Street. The next evening, October 24, the Blas Aguilar Adobe holds its own commemoration of the Mission's founding from 6 to 8 p.m. The SJC250 committee says its yearlong events are free and open to the public.

That puts three anniversary events in about 34 hours: the Friday morning bell, the Friday night tours, and the Saturday commemoration. That weekend has more going on than November 1.

For the trolley tours, the Historical Society asks you to reserve because space is limited. Call 949-493-8444. Free parking is across from the Library on El Camino Real. The Society runs these tours on the first Tuesday of every month, so if October 6 is too soon, the next one is the first Tuesday in November.

The Playhouse's first season back runs right up to the anniversary

Camino Real Playhouse reopened this fall at 31896 Plaza Drive. It had been across from the Mission since the late 1980s and moved because of redevelopment plans for that property. President and Artistic Director Leslie Eisner told The Capistrano Dispatch that the search for a new home alone took two years. The reopening night was September 10.

"We're not just back. We're home." Leslie Eisner, speaking to the audience before the reopening performance

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" closed today, October 4. Next up is "Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors" by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen. It runs October 16 through November 1, with shows October 16 to 18, 23 to 25, and 30 and 31, and a final show November 1. Friday and Saturday shows on opening weekend are at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. The show closes on the anniversary itself. It also has a weekend that overlaps the Los Rios evenings, so you could do the October 23 ghost tour and a Dracula show on the 24th or 25th in one weekend.

River Street Marketplace has two more October evenings: Salsa Dancing on Friday, October 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., and a Halloween Trunk or Treat and Scavenger Hunt on Friday, October 30. The marketplace's listing gives two end times for the Halloween event, 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Cowboy by Nick's, a fire-cooked steak and cocktail restaurant planned for 31904 Paseo Adelanto, is still listed as coming in fall 2026, with no opening date. In May, the Orange County Register reported a fall-to-winter target.

What hasn't been confirmed

A few items circulating around the anniversary aren't settled yet:

  • The October 10 Birthday Bash. The Dispatch says the San Juan Capistrano Costco will give free birthday cupcakes to the first 1,000 Mission guests on Saturday, October 10, as part of a food and wine festival. A Mission release in January also announced a Food & Wine Festival for that date. The Mission's current October calendar doesn't list it. Call the Mission before you go.
  • November 1 start time. The Mission's pages say 9 a.m. in one place and 10 a.m. in another.
  • November 1 admission. No free-entry offer has been announced.
  • The founding-day program. As of today, no speakers or performers are listed.

The anniversary keeps going after November 1

The day after the founding date, the Mission's Artifact of the Month becomes its sacramental registers written in 1776. They're on display in the Mission Treasures Exhibit from November 2 to December 7. A new exhibit, "Photo Reproductions from the Archival Collection," opens November 21.

The newest piece of the anniversary comes last. At the September 18 Romance of the Mission gala, the Mission previewed a digital mapping projection called "The Story of the Mission: A Legacy of Builders, Faith & Time." The public version runs during Capistrano Lights: Mission in Lights. It opens December 18 and plays nightly at 6:05 p.m. on select dates, December 19 to 23 and December 26 to 30. The Mission says the full Capistrano Lights schedule is still to come. Before that, the City's annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is Saturday, December 5, at 5:45 p.m. at 31852 El Camino Real.

Put together, the dates run from a gala in September, through a month of bell ringings and Los Rios evenings, to a short program on November 1 and a projection show that opens seven weeks later. If you can only make one date, the December projection is the part of the anniversary that's new.

At Ballesteros Group, we follow the South County calendar as closely as the market, and the Mission's 250th is one of this fall's biggest dates.
